Mr. Wesley Henry Arey, Sr. was born to Deaf parents in Waynesboro, VA. He attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) until his father found another job in North Carolina. He then attended the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf (CNCSD) for a few years before returning to VSDB where he graduated in 1987.

He has always been an athlete excelling in football, wrestling, and track. He also became a natural born leader at VSDB inspiring other Deaf students to excel in anything. He enrolled the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) for approximately a year. He became a professional painter under his father and friend's influence.

He is one of the first founders of the Deaf Grassroots Movement of 2015 where he continues to fight for the rights of all Def people in the areas of communication, employment, and education. He is the father of three adult children and two grandsons along with his wife, Dr. Rhonda Jennings-Arey
